Background
We started Arm Clinic as one way to improve arm recovery. Research has shown that a lot of practice of meaningful activities helps to drive improvements. So we often give patients exercises to do at home, but we are aware that patients may find these difficult to do. So we had a think about ways we could increase the amount of therapy people receive, without increasing the cost to patients. So Arm Clinic is a session that offers two hours of therapy for the price of one!
How Arm Clinic Works
Each person has a programme to follow which includes arm exercises or activities that are relevant and challenging for their individual abilities. Some of the activies are done with other participants, but most are done indivdually. There is usually one therapist for every two to three participants and the therapist spends time with each person in turn to progress or change the activity.
Research confirms that patients make similar gains from this type of circuit-programme compared to an equal duration of a one-on-one session. We hope that because people have the opportunity to practice for longer, they will make more gains.
Benefits
Most people enjoy the opportunity of working alongside other patients, who can offer support, encouragement as well as a healthy dose of competition! Participants will also have the opportunity to work with different therapists, who may have fresh ideas. And most importantly each person gets double the amount of therapy for the price of one session.
Anyone who wishes to improve the movement and function of one or both arms is a suitable candidate for Arm Clinic.
